The Nikkei posted an interesting interview after the launch of of the Canon EOS R1 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II in the interview Tsuyoshi Tokura calls Sony its biggest competitor

Canon Vice President Tsuyoshi Tokura called Sony the “biggest competitor”. By launching flagship cameras, Canon hopes to avoid being caught up by Sony. According to data from the research company Techno System Research, in 2023, Canon, which ranks first in global mirrorless camera shipments, will account for 41%, while Sony, which ranks second, will account for 32%.

According to the interview Canon launched the flagship Canon R1 to keep the rapidly growing Sony from catching up and Canon seems to hope that photographers will care more about reliability and the ability to get the shot than anything extra that Sony has to offer with the Sony a9III or Sony A1. Interestingly, Nikon isn’t really mentioned by Canon considering the success of the Nikon Z9.
