PP: Canon EOS R5 Mark II Review – A Great Camera For Any Photographer

Petapixel posted its full Canon EOS R5 Mark II review, which you can watch above or check out the key points below.

  • The handling is a perfect mix of grip size and improved button placement
  • The menus have been improved greatly
  • Eye control calibration has problems with some shooters, but it isn’t necessary
  • The new hotshoe cover doesn’t come off easily
  • Noise reduction performed on RAW files
  • The new stacked sensor takes a minor dynamic range hit when shooting with a mechanical shutter
  • Shooting with an electronic shutter has a slightly better dynamic range than the original R5
  • ISO differences only last up until the second dynamic range step
  • Read-out speed is about 1/60th of a second
  • The new R5 image sensor is going to be very useful for a variety of situations even though the older R5 sensor might be better for landscapes due to the additional dynamic range
  • The new R5 has noticeably improved autofocus
  • The 800mm f/11 works well with the R5 II
  • AF Detection modes are pretty good
  • The R5 Mark II is a very predictable camera
  • From a sports and action photographer perspective up rez and in-camera noise reduction aren’t useful for a professional
  • Video specs are about the same but the video mode is a slightly slower read-out speed than when taking photographs
  • Canon C-Log 2 for the first time because it is usually for cinema cameras
  • Can’t shoot oversampled 4k 60p
  • Powered hotshoe if you can get the cover off
  • Subject AF will only focus on the selected subject so if you walk out of frame focus doesn’t pull to the background
  • Tally lamp
  • Waveform, but you can’t change the place of size of it
  • Overheating isn’t a big issue like it was on the R5
  • 8k 60p RAW for 23 min, 4k 120p 23 min, 8k 24p 51 min, 4k 24p 74 minutes, beyond that you will use up the battery before the camera overheats if you drop out of fine 4k 24p which was 75 minutes.
  • It is a great camera for any photographer
