There is a report by gori.me that all Canon EOS R5 Mark II cameras might be impacted by an autofocus stuttering issue that Canon has confirmed is happening. The author of the article gORI noticed the issue upon recipt of the camera and sent it into Canon for repair. When he was contacted about the completion of the repair he checked the Canon repair portal to find the following note:

“① Regarding the issue you mentioned, “AF frame movement is jerky,” we have confirmed that this issue also occurs on the same model we own.
We are currently checking the details, including whether there is a workaround, so please wait a little longer. We
have also confirmed that some multi-controller operations may not respond properly, so we are replacing the parts of the rear cover unit, including the multi-controller.
We apologize for the inconvenience, and will contact you again as soon as we have more information.

*Updated to the latest firmware. (Ver1.0.0→1.0.1)”

It sounds like there was some issue with the electronic inside his camera, but when he recieved the camera back from Canon he noticed that the issue was still occuring. So gORI looked into the issue further with a Canon service center and was informed that the stuttering AF issue is a problem “that commonly occurs in the EOS R5 Mark II body” and that he was the first case in the country. Canon is working on a fix that will likely be firmware related, but until then as a temporary measure you can try the following:

  • Set the display frame rate to ” Smoothness priority “
  • Keep the information displayed on the TFT/EVF to a minimum , or use the INFO button to switch to a display with less information (or reduce the displayed information)

The temporary fix worked for gORI, but when he tried it previous to the repair it did not work, so there might have been something wrong with his camera beyond the bug that can impact all Canon EOS R5 Mark II cameras. gORI also loaded his settings onto a Canon EOS R5 Mark II  in the store to see if the stuttering issue was reproducable on other cameras and it was reproducable. Hopefully Canon will release an update to address AF stuttering soon.
