The Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 will be coming to RF and Z mount soon.
Press Release:
Cosina Co., Ltd. is releasing the Voigtländer-brand NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4, a full-frame compatible interchangeable lens available for Nikon Z-mount and Canon RF-mount systems.
“NOKTON” is the designation given to Voigtländer lenses with a maximum aperture brighter than F1.5. While large-aperture lenses were originally sought in the 1950s—when the first NOKTON appeared—to enable photography in low-light conditions, the trend today has shifted. With the advent of high-sensitivity image sensors, photographers now seek large-aperture lenses primarily to utilize the significant background blur (bokeh) created by wide apertures as a form of artistic expression.
The NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4 is a compact, large-aperture wide-angle lens that revives the character of classic lenses for the modern era through state-of-the-art optical design. Departing from modern lens concepts that prioritize raw performance metrics, this lens intentionally retains certain optical aberrations to achieve a unique character and beautiful rendering.
It features an 8-element, 6-group optical configuration based on the double-Gauss design—symmetrical around the aperture stop—to faithfully reproduce the distinctive rendering style of classic lenses. At wide-open apertures, the lens produces a natural, smooth bokeh that creates a sense of depth and a soft, delicate image quality; conversely, stopping down the aperture yields the high resolution typical of modern lenses, allowing the photographer to enjoy a variety of rendering characteristics depending on the aperture setting.
The NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4 is compatible with full-frame sensors and is optimized for the respective camera mounts. It offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.27m and is designed exclusively for manual focusing. The lens features an all-metal barrel, and the focus ring utilizes a high-precision helicoid mechanism—lubricated with specialized grease—to provide a silky-smooth operating feel that supports exacting focus adjustments.
Aperture control is mechanical and directly linked to the aperture ring, meaning adjustments are made on the lens itself rather than via the camera’s command dials. The lens features a 10-blade aperture, rendering out-of-focus point light sources with a pleasing, well-defined shape.
It comes with a dedicated metal screw-in lens hood. Equipped with electronic contacts that enable communication between the lens and the camera body, it supports Exif data recording, in-body image stabilization, and various focus-assist functions.
