The Canon EOS R5 Mark II was added to the DPR’s studio scene and the performance looks pretty good, but I think there is some additional color noise from the previous generation camera. Some camera companies have been trying to clean up noise in their RAW files so the difference may be the product of processing. The DPR studio scene test has been around for many years and they do a decent job of creating comparable results.

LP-E6P Batteries: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II doesn’t currently work with third-party batteries on the market, but third parties should be able to solve this issue in the future. It appears that Canon made a similar tweak to its batteries like Fujifilm did years ago that will require slight changes to generic LP-E6P batteries.

Photons to Photos published its photographic dynamic range results for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and the camera compares well to the Nikon Z7II, Sony a7IV, and Sony a7RV, but ultimately doesn’t impress. Canon really should find a company that can make a sensor that surpasses what Sony can produce. You can view and manipulate the above chart here.

Camera Model Maximum
PDR
Low Light

Low Light

Canon EOS R5 Mark II 11.45 4846 10.60
Nikon Z 7II 11.60 4157 10.38
Sony ILCE-7RM5 11.70 5244 10.71
Sony ILCE-7M4 11.71 5365 10.75

Phototrend published a lengthy interview with Canon that you can read in full here or you can check out my summary below:

  • Canon wanted the Canon EOS R1 to far surpass the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III
  • When transitioning to mirrorless Canon started by thinking about what would make the best mirrorless flagship camera
  • When the Canon EOS R3 launched Canon already had the EOS R1 in mind
  • Canon has global shutter technology that brings certain advantages and possibilities for the future
  • The mission was to create the ultimate professional tool with the EOS R1 regardless of environment that is free of defects
  • EOS R1 focused on achieve ISO 102,400 at 40fps which balanced out best at 24MP
  • Digic Accelerator is a lot faster than Digic X so it can handle deep learning technology even at 40fps
  • Canon creates a RAW file before it makes a JPEG using both the Digic X and Digic Accelerator which are separate chips
  • The Digic Accelerator is the first chip to receive the signal from the sensor and it performs AF and subject detection along with some other tasks and then the Digic X chip develops the image
  • The Canon EOS R1 is the flagship camera, but Canon sees the Canon EOS R5 Mark II as being equally important because it serves hybrid shooters so the camera had to push boundaries and incorporate everything
  • The Canon EOS R6 Mark III should surpass the Canon EOS R5 Mark II someday
  • Canon doesn’t like to artificially limit cameras and they hope every new camera is the best so they will not hold back with the Canon EOS R6 Mark III so it may be better than the R5 someday
  • An example of Canon not hindering cameras is that the Canon EOS R1 is the flagship camera, but the Canon EOS R3 might be better for some photographers
  • Canon is very interested in exploring new types of lenses and they are exploring new horizons
  • Canon believes lenses expand the scope of application of a camera, which bodies do not do
  • Apple and Canon partnered to create virtual reality and Canon wants to work more closely with them to develop this new area of imaging
  • Canon doesn’t want to talk about RF lenses from other manufacturers at the moment beyond Sigma and Tamron, but they are talking with others
  • Mirrorless technology is mature enough to replace SLR cameras for every task today
  • Mirrorless technology only offers advantages over SLR now without disadvantages
  • The transition to mirrorless cameras in Asia is almost complete and it is accelerating in Europe
  • The European camera market is a bit slower than the global market and entry-level SLR cameras are still very popular in Europe compared to the rest of the world
  • Hopefully, the European camera market will return to growth
  • The Canon EOS R1 has a lot of features that make it an expensive camera, but Canon believes users will think the camera is worth it once they try the Canon EOS R1
